LH Respite
Admission Policy
Respite care is offered to hospice patients when there are no end-of-life referrals waiting.
Respite care is offered to provide a caregiver with a break or to provide temporary relief in an
immediate caregiver crisis. Respite guests may stay a maximum of seven days. There is no
requirement regarding a short-term life expectancy for respite guests. The hospice staff will
provide medical records and assessment information. Laurel House Admissions Coordinator
will review referrals and approve admissions. If space is not available, the potential guest will be
placed on a waiting list and contacted as soon as space is available. Decisions regarding order
of admission are based solely on order of referral.
There are no fees charged to guests or their families for care at Laurel House. We ask for a
donation in lieu of care.
Laurel House staff reserves the right to deny admission to guests with active, infectious disease
that may place other guests or staff at risk.
The following criteria must be met for admission:
- The guest must be enrolled in a local hospice program.
- Laurel House staff and the hospice provider serving the guest recommend the admission and agree upon the plan of care at Laurel House and plans for discharge and/or continuing care.
- The guest does not require care in a hospital or skilled nursing facility and his/her needs
can be met in a non-medical setting. (refer to comfort care home guidelines) - The guest has established a Do Not Resuscitate Order
- The guest’s and/or caregiver’s behavior does not present a danger to self or others and
would not be disruptive to others at Laurel House - The guest does not have known, active infections
- The guest and caregiver agree on the purpose of admission and on the plan of care,
including the projected length of stay as a guest at Laurel House.
